“Know That Mood” A Poem

Know That Mood

Know that mood

When the pen is poised

The keyboard is lit up

All ready to go

Know that mood

When the scritch scratch of a pencil

Or the tip tap of the keys

Is the only sound you want to hear

Know that mood

When words are ready

To flow from your mind

Onto the blank page

Know that mood

When you just need

To create strong emotions and dazzling pictures

With mere words

Yeah,

I know that mood

“Star Light, Star Bright” A Poem

Star Light, Star Bright

Star light,

Star bright

First star I see tonight

Star light,

Star bright

Only star I see tonight

Star light,

Star bright

Others come,

Other go

Star light,

Star bright

My eyes behold

Only you

Star light,

Star bright

Two stars I see tonight

Star light,

Star bright

No longer words

To describe the first

Star light,

Star bright

Time passes

Your light grows dim

Star light,

Star bright

Another

Grows brighter

Star light,

Star bright

Second star I see tonight

Star light,

Star bright

Only star I see tonight

“There Is” A Poem

There Is

There is a border of metal between the kingdoms

It is a railroad a few houses down

There is a mountain range waiting to be explored

It is an abandoned playground across the way

There is a labyrinth of caverns

It is a disconnected sewer pipe in the backyard

There is a quiet meadow hidden away

It is a patch of soft, green grass next to the house

There is a fiery demon in the dungeon

It is a metal furnace in the basement

There is a land of lost things

It is an old, dirty couch

There is a vast and stormy sea on the horizon

It is an empty fish tank in the living room

There is a magic mirror

It is a broken TV set

There is a maze-like library

It is  a stack of dusty books on the bedside table

There is a prince charming one day coming to the rescue

It is a shy, kind boy next door

There is a lost princess locked in a tower

It is a girl trapped by pain

There is a sorceress away on an expedition to find a magical cure

It is a mother fighting for custody

There is a cunning, violent dragon

It is a father prone to secret, drunken abuse

There is a mystical world waiting to be found

It is the reality we all live in

“Do They Know I Love Them?” A Poem

Do They Know I Love Them?

Does he know I love him?

Does she know I love her?

Does he know I love him when I cook him dinner?

Does she know I love her when I eat her slightly burnt food?

Does he know I love him when I sing our song at the top of my lungs?

Does she know I love her when I quietly sing along?

Does he know I love him when I clean up after him?

Does she know I love her when I promise to help next time?

Does he know I love him when I watch action films with him?

Does she know I love her when I watch rom-coms with her?

Does he know I love him when I nag at him?

Does she know I love her when I ignore her?

Does he know I love him when I cry into his shirt?

Does she know I love her when I stroke her hair?

Does he know I love him when I let him buy a new Xbox game?

Does she know I love her when I let her buy a new Coach purse?

Does he know I love him when I let my cat sleep between us in bed?

Does she know I love her when I refuse to give her cat second breakfast?

Does he know I love him when I slip little notes into his lunch?

Does she know I love her when I slip Hershey Kisses into her work bag?

Does he know I love him when I’m being irrational?

Does she know I love her when I misunderstand?

Does he know I love him when I kiss him awake?

Does she know I love her when I kiss her goodnight?

Does he know I love him when I leave his dog outside all day?

Does she know I love her when I let my dog chase her cat up a tree?

Does he know I love him when I text him first every day?

Does she know I love her when I rarely text first?

Does he know that I know he loves me?

Does she know that I know she loves me?

“Valentine’s Day” A Poem

Valentine’s Day

Ah yes,

Valentine’s Day

A day for people

To be made more aware

Of how single they are

Or of how in love they are

A day for people

To watch Netflix

And chill

Or binge watch an entire show

A day for people

To eat sweets

Leftover from Christmas

Or from a heart shaped box

A day for people

To go for a walk with a loved one

With two legs

Or with four

A day for people

To be reminded of how much they love

Laying under that one blanket

Or cuddling on the couch

A day for people

To be happy

With others

Or by themselves

Ah yes,

Valentine’s Day

“What Separates Us Is Gone” A Poem

What Separates Us Is Gone
Oh, the joy I feel
In knowing
That the span of time
That separates us
Is drawing
To a close

Years to months
Months to weeks
Weeks to days
Days to hours
Hours to minutes
Minutes to seconds
Seconds to now

Now we are together
For the span of time
That separated us
Has drawn to a close

Oh the joy I feel
In knowing
That the distance
That separates us
Is disappearing

Kilometers to hectometers
Hectometers to decameters
Decameters to meters
Meters to decimeters
Decimeters to centimeters
Centimeters to millimeters
Millimeters to here

Here we embrace
For the span of distance
That separated us
Has disappeared

Oh, the joy I feel
In knowing
That thanks to love
Forever
And always
The time
The distance
That separates us
Is gone

No matter how long it is
Until we see each other again
No matter how far apart we are
From each other’s arms
We are not alone
For love
Has demolished
That which separates us

“Beauty” A Poem

Beauty

Before

When I looked at my face

In the mirror

I saw something

I didn’t like

A nose that turned up too far

Plain, boring eyes

Teeth crooked enough for a witch

A much too big forehead

Big, ready pimples

But over time

I began to believe people

When they complimented me

When I looked to try and see what they saw

I found beauty

What did I do

When I was finally happy

With my own face?

I decided to wear makeup

My mama always said

Makeup is to enhance what you already got

And so

Every morning

I looked at my pretty face

And made it beautiful

But eventually

I began to look at my ugly face

And make it pretty

A nightmare

Come true

I never wanted

To rely on makeup and clothes

To feel beautiful

Because that isn’t true beauty

I’m not beautiful

Because my nose turns up

Or because it’s small and cute

But because I’m not ashamed to smell every book I get my hands on

I’m not beautiful

Because I have plain eyes

Or because I wear eyeshadow

But because my eyes reflect my kindness

I’m not beautiful

Because I had vampire fangs

Or because I’m straightening my teeth

But because I love to smile and laugh

I’m not beautiful

Because I have a big forehead

Or because I cover it up with bangs and beanies

But because I love to learn

I’m not beautiful

Because I have pimples

Or because I scrub them away

But because I am human

You are not beautiful

Because of what makeup and clothes you wear

Or because of what you look like at all

But because of who you are as a person

Beauty on the inside

Shines through to the outside

And if you can see the beauty in yourself

So can everyone else
